Episode # 282 - Playwrights In Conversation: Matt Freeman and Adam Szymkowicz

Adam Szymkowicz and Matt Freeman

Adam Szymkowicz and Matt Freeman

Playwright Adam Szymkowicz has a new play, Pretty Theft being presented by Flux Theatre Ensemble. Fellow playwright and frequent contributor to nytheatre.com, Matthew Freeman, makes use of the nytheatrecast for a conversation with Adam.

In this easy going give and take, Matthew and Adam focus on the hefty topic of 'stealing' from other plays and playwrights. Matthew asserts that there are, loosely, three different aspects: using the work/style/theme of another because of consciously wanting to create something you admire, subconsciously absorbing aspects of someone's work and then discovering similarities in your own work, and the extreme, which is plagiarism.

The ideas and thoughts of these two playwrights are compelling and should lead to more serious discussion. The actual driving force for Adam's writing this play is what spurs this fascinating discussion. Listen to discover more about this.
